Start in five steps

  1. Pick a plan you can keep. 14:10 is the gentlest. 16:8 is the most popular.
  2. Choose your eating window. Build it around the meal you care about most, usually dinner or lunch.
  3. Start after dinner. Your first fast begins when you finish eating in the evening. Sleep covers most of it.
  4. Drink through the morning. Water, black coffee and plain tea do not break the fast.
  5. Track it. Time each fast so you know when the window opens and can see the days add up.

How long should I fast?

For a beginner, 13 to 16 hours a day is plenty. Longer is not automatically better, and a plan you keep for months beats a harder one you drop after a week. See every option side by side in intermittent fasting schedules.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Starting with a very long fast and giving up.
  • Not drinking enough, then blaming the fast for the headache.
  • Overeating when the window opens. Eat a normal meal.
  • Treating one missed day as failure. It is one day.

Check with a doctor before starting if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, have diabetes or another medical condition, take prescription medication, or have a history of disordered eating.
